Written by:

Rising rapper Smoke Dawg has died.

A casualty of a shooting outside Toronto’s Cube club on Saturday evening (6/30), Smoke Dawg was one of three people struck by gunfire.

The MC was 21.

While there hasn’t been an official police confirmation of his death, well-known rappers like Mustafa the Poet and Drake have already posted tributes on social media.

Mustafa the Poet wrote: “The worst day of my life, I somehow keep finding a new worst. Smokey is gone, may our prayers follow him to heaven.”

Meanwhile, Drake wrote: “All these gifts and blessed souls and inner lights being extinguished lately is devastating. I wish peace would wash over our city. So much talent and so many stories we never get to see play out. Rest up Smoke.”

Smoke Dawg, whose ancestry included Trinidadian, Jamaican and Somali roots, was a member of the Halal Gang, which included Safe, Puffy L’z and Mo-G.

Ironically, Smoke Dawg had just put out a new song this week called “Fountain Freestyle.”

He was working on his debut at the time of his death.
