Joe Perry collapsed backstage after a Saturday night show at Madison Square Garden and while there has been much speculation about the current state of Perry’s health, his publicist Marcee Rondan of the Mitch Schneider Organization has just issued an official update about the guitarist’s condition.
In the press release she wrote: “Following a guest performance during Billy Joel’s show last night at Madison Square Garden, Joe Perry experienced shortness of breath and was treated backstage by paramedics who gave the guitarist oxygen and used a tracheal tube to clear his airway before taking him to a hospital. This morning Perry remains in the hospital where he is alert and responsive. The Aerosmith guitarist will be unable to appear today at Rock And Roll Fantasy Camp in Florida and apologizes to those attending. Perry is expected to return to the road later this month.”
While the 68-year-old Aerosmith guitarist was tended to backstage, Joel finished his set, unaware that Perry had been in any sort of distress.
A fan told SEM she was also unaware of Perry feeling ill. “He sounded great and he looked fine,” she said. “I don’t think anyone suspected anything was wrong.”
Perry, who’s set to begin a solo tour at the end of the month to promote his new album Sweetzerland Manifesto, had a similar collapse back in 2016 at a Hollywood Vampires show. Although many feared the cause was a heart attack, Perry had simply collapsed due to exhaustion and dehydration.
